What I needed was an introductory book with some substance, so that I could accelerate in the various familiar directions I needed to go. Unfortunately, a lot of what I read was written as 'beginner's guides', with little exposure to what was 'under the hood'. I spent a while surfing the Web trying to get inside this new thing, and discover a familiar baseline.
